Andrew Hallidie ran the first cable car down Clay Street in 1873, giving San Francisco a way to climb hills too steep for horses. Three lines survive today, two from Powell Street and one along California Street. The system was named a National Historic Landmark in 1964, and the gripmen still work the levers by hand.
